The series not only tells the story of specific clubs, but moves chronologically from the mid 1800s through the 1950s, examining political and social movements, the development of various forms of music, theater, dance, fashion and entertainment, the effects of the world wars, prohibition, the depression, immigration and new technologies, all told through the lens of their effect on nightlife.
